Please note that the Watermota J-Type gearbox needs ordinary engine oil (IE something like Castrol GTX) and NOTEP 80 or EP90. Hypoid oils will cause untold damage!

Hmmm....the handbook says 30 grade, while the plate on the gearbox says 20:50 or something like that.

I found a little oil in the bilges, just a smidge, so topped the box up with half a cupful of 20:50.

I assume with a 1.75 pint capacity this wouldn't cause any harm?

I'll change it over the weekend at Ashmount I think, although it was perfect in the 6 hours or so of use it had since

Either straight SAE30 or 20/50 should be fine... its the hypoid EP stuff that kills J-types!

A word of warning from the now wise.

Take care when changing the gearbox oil as the dip stick is a daft shape and tends to give misleading results. I ended up overfilling my gearbox and after using the boat for a weekend it blew a seal in the gearbox. Gearbox out and a trip to Sheridan marine for a full seal and gasket replacement cured the problem.

I now top up with the top cover removed (4 bolts) so you can see the oil level, a lot safer way.

I'll try that!

Mine was a little overfilled, but it came out via a breather...
