Yes, What we have now is a white bungee between the roof handrails.  It lets the panel slide back and forth and yet provides just the right amount of resistance to wind getting in under the canopy and lifting the blessed thing right off!

Here's a piccy of the damage. <sob>

As BrianM said, I had removed the sliding-roof tracks because every single one of the screw holes was leaking.  Awful.  Huge water-filled bulgy bulges in the cockpit headlining.  And we could tell that it had happened before because there were tiny holes in the headlining where previous owners had drained the water!

No, if I ever refit the sliding-roof tracks, I will be fastening them down with an epoxy adhesive.  Or, if I'm in a rush, my hot-glue gun.

Just to add a little bit to this...

The bungee we were using was one of a cheap pair bought in a sale at a local ironmongers.  The other day, I went up to the marina and, as I climbed aboard, I thought that the bungee looked a bit slack.

So I gave it a twang! and... it crumbled into dust!

The UV in the sunlight had completely degraded (a) the outer 'nylon' sheath and (b) the internal rubber cordage to the point where if I'd left it a couple more weeks, the whole thing would have simply been a line of white dust across the cockpit roof!

We now have some real nylon cord across there to hold it down!

The moral of the story?

Check your bungees!
